And while the actor has maintained a rather private life since her split from husband Ben Falcone in 2017, she did open up about her process in a January 2018 interview with Vogue.

On Her Childhood:

Growing up in Syracuse, New York, McCarthy was the “fat kid” in school, according to Vogue. 

“I was always more into sports than anything else,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I was always the fat kid in school.”

Melissa McCarthy recognised how her insecurities affected her life as she got older. “I think when people are younger, they’re not as aware of how it affects them,” she said in the Vogue interview. “When you’re 17, you don’t realize that that still impacts you.”

On Crazy Diets:

There are many celebrity diets, but McCarthy’s seemed to be the most extreme. “I do not know if other people have this need to diet as much as I do,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I have crazy food cravings.”

McCarthy’s high-fat diet was meant to satisfy her cravings, but it also had another purpose. “I was trying to lose weight because I was pregnant with Addison (her daughter),” she later added.

The actress had her daughter in May 2012, and she weighed seven pounds, nine ounces at the time of delivery. 

There isn’t much research to back it up when it comes to the health benefits of a ketogenic diet, but Melissa McCarthy has spoken about how it has helped her.

“I have been on a stern keto diet for the past eight months,” she said in a video in January 2018. “It’s been great for my body, and it’s been tough for me to give it up.”

On Her Recent Weight Loss:

After giving birth to her daughter, Melissa McCarthy said she was “desperate” to get back in shape. “I was in a very unhealthy place,” she said in Vogue. “I was pregnant and had just given birth, and I was desperate to get back into shape.”

So she signed up for a fitness program and started tracking her calories. “I was just doing it for myself,” she said in Vogue. “I had no idea it would become a lifestyle.”

Over the next year and a half, McCarthy would drop 18 pounds. “It is not about what you look like on the outside; it’s what’s on the inside,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I hope that by sharing my story, other people will feel more confident about themselves.”

On Choosing Her Roles:

When it came to choosing her roles, McCarthy said she was drawn to complex characters who are “not likeable.” “I love a good love story, and I love a good drama, but I don’t love them as much if they’re not challenging me,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I love what I do, but I don’t love who I am when I’m not doing it.”

That being said, McCarthy has also said that she has plenty of love for her husband, Falcone, and their little girl, Vivian. “I love my hubby and my daughter so much, and that’s what’s important,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I do not need anybody to feel bad for me.”

On Her Body Image:

Melissa McCarthy said it’s vital to love yourself no matter what to body image. “It’s so important to love yourself and be gentle with yourself,” she said in the Vogue interview. “You are only as good as you think you are.”

While she’s glad Vivian isn’t experiencing the body image issues she did as a young girl, Melissa McCarthy weight loss still gets bothered when people criticize her figure. “I think it’s important to remember to be gentle with yourself and love yourself,” she said in the Vogue interview. “But it is also crucial not to be too hard on yourself.”

On Designing Her Clothing Line:

In addition to designing her workout wear, McCarthy also created her clothing line, Mae Mae’s Little Loves. “I’ve wanted to design my clothes for a long time,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I love putting outfits together; I love picking out what I’m going to wear.”

The line, which debuted in September 2017, focuses on “super-fun” pieces “suitable for all ages.” 

The first collection includes tops, bottoms, dresses, and accessories. “We wanted to create pieces that you can wear to work, wear when you’re out with friends, or wear with your kids,” Melissa McCarthy weight loss said.

On Being a Role Model:

Melissa McCarthy admitted that she’s not perfect as a role model despite her best intentions. “I don’t walk around with a perfect attitude all the time,” she said in the Vogue interview. “I don’t want to put on a fake smile and be fakey happy.”

But Melissa McCarthy said she tries to practise what she preaches regarding body image. “I love my body,” she said in the Vogue interview. “It’s probably the best body I’ve ever had.”

And when it comes to being a role model, Melissa McCarthy said she hopes to inspire others by showing them that the hard way pays off. “I hope that by showing other people that it’s possible to make your dreams happen, that it’s possible to have a family, have kids, and have a career, it will encourage other people to do it, too,” she said in the Vogue interview. “That’s what I want to do, inspire other women.”

On Sexist Standards:

Melissa McCarthy said she’s also been affected by how women are perceived in the media. “I think it’s vital to remember that it’s 2018 and that women are not a fad,” she said in the Vogue interview. “We’re not a trend. We’re not something that’s going to be here one day and gone the next. We should be treated as individuals.”

That being said, McCarthy said she’s also experienced sexism in the fashion industry. “I’ve experienced sexism in the industry too,” she said in the Vogue interview. “People will say, ‘You’re too fat to wear that,’ or, ‘You’re too old to wear that.'”
