The Steps You Need to Follow to turn Your Idea into an Invention

Invention Idea

Many of the things we see in our household, schools, offices, and other surroundings were once an idea that turned into an invention. The idea for an invention stems from some need or necessity, for example, going from one place to another on foot was a very tiring and stressful task which led to the idea of wheels, and cycle which then led to vehicles and even airplanes.

The inventions done in ancient times were made possible by using the materials, and resources available at that time. The modern things we see and even use in our households such as electric bulbs, fans, television, washing machine, and radio are a few of the things which have progressed over the years with the help of technology and more quality materials. Most of the things we may require to fulfill our needs are more or less already invented and in use, coming up with an idea of a brand new invention requires a whole lot of intuition and thinking. An invention can be anything from a novel concept, a brilliant new device, or even process but it has to be distinctive and one that people have never thought about or seen. People in ancient times invented things without the easy engineering methods and technology that we have at our disposal, but still, things got introduced and helped people do particular work. There is a scientific, cultural, socio-political, and humanistic invention. Most of the inventions we see today are scientific and include automobiles, computing, medicine, aviation, and railroads.

The idea of a new invention can come to anyone and is not bound to any religion, caste, or culture. An idea can come in your mind whether you may be walking down the lane, relaxing on the sofa, or going up on the elevator. But behind every idea that turns into an invention, there is a story, a reason which led to the idea. You may come across a problem or have seen a problem on television or around you and thought about the possible solutions. Many people including you would think about the options available to them which can resolve the issue for the time being, but the art of invention is thinking out of the box and coming up with a more worthwhile solution that others fail to come up with or even realized about it. Some of the tips that can help you invent a product project are

  • Brainstorming

The first thing you should do when you come across a problem is to write down everything that comes in your mind. The next step is to look at each idea and think about whether it is possible or not logically. If someone else can dream and think about a thing and turn it into a reality then you certainly can too.

  • Critical thinking

One of the most important parts is critical thinking as it allows you to compare your idea with any existing solutions. You also get to see your idea from a different perspective.

  • Flexible approach

One of the virtue you must possess is patience and having a flexible approach as you do not always get the things exactly as you thought about, and there are tradeoffs. Your flexibility allows you to think further and experiment with your idea

  • Refining your skills

Every person has particular skills which the other person may not have. Your first step is to know what special talent you possess and if thinking and skill level you have reflects in your idea and approach or not.

  • Read and research extensively

A person with a passion for reading develops a particular sense of reading everything written on a particular subject that he is thinking of or researching for the idea that has popped in his mind. The next phase is testing your idea or theory and seeing if it even works or not or what changes need to be done. You should also research the existing solutions and see if the idea you are working on original and authentic or not, and if anyone else has already done the invention then what possibilities are there.

Once you have thought about the idea, then you must follow certain steps to ensure that your effort, time, and thinking, is not wasted. The steps include

  • Documenting your idea

Having just a mere idea is useless and worthless unless you give it a proper shape. You have to write down your idea and proofs that it was your original idea and the events that led to it. You should also write on how you would convert your idea into an invention and how you would market it. You have to file for patent rights for your idea so that someone else cannot claim it later that the idea was theirs.

  • Research it

You will have to research your idea and potential invention from both a business and a legal perspective. You should discuss the legal matters of the patent with an expert attorney. You should also research the market and see whether your product invention is feasible and will be used by consumers or not.  You should also determine the cost and other relevant matters such as marketing, logistics, and distribution

  • Making a demo product or prototype

Once you have documented your idea and supported it with existing theories and calculations, then the next step is developing a prototype or a demo product to test whether your invention works or not. The main reason for a prototype is to see what flaws your design has and any error in the functioning of the product. These days with the help of technology you can easily make a 3D (dimensional) model which helps to reduce any significant error.

  • File for patent

Once your prototype design has passed the testing stage, then the next step is to file for a patent. There are two types of patents, utility patent (needed for new machines or processes) and a design patent (for new manufacturing design). You can fill the patent application on your own, but you need a professional look at it. First, you also need an attorney to go through the patent if you think someone else would copy your idea and invention.

  • Marketing your invention

The final step is to launch your product on the market. You should develop a business plan and determine who will invest in your project, how will you manufacture and sell the product. You have the option of licensing the product and selling through an established company, you will receive a little percentage in loyalty, but in the long run, you would end up making more money.
